Batman Afghan {crochet pattern}

This pattern was a toughie.  It took a long time to get it written and even longer to get it worked up.  I usually write my patterns as I go, so I know exactly where I am.  This one, I chose to write from the beginning, based off of a picture that I graphed out.  There were many revisions along the way, as well as an error that was made very early on (I inserted 1 extra stitch somewhere while working it) and it threw me off and I had to keep in mind that one extra stitch and make sure that I didn't accidentally insert it somewhere along the line in the pattern.

I will not lie... it's very large.  It is the size of my queen bed.  It took me forever, but I think it came out great.  There is a small problem in one of his ears, where I think i shifted the pattern outward.  By this time, I didn't want to deal with it anymore so I left it be.  Perhaps you can find it, and if you do, just let me know!

*Updated on February 26th to include revisions by dedicated readers and a link to a google doc with the original chart that I used to make this blanket- see notes below for further explanations!*

Batman Blanket Crochet Pattern

Materials needed:
7-8 Skeins of Black Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Red Heart)
2 skeins of Red Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Red Heart)
a very small amount of White Worsted Weight Yarn (again, I used Red Heart)
Size "H" crochet Hook

*I only used about 2 skeins of red heart, but I actually used parts of four different skeins because there were certain points of the blanket where it was helpful to have more than just two skeins going at once.*

Color will be written out with the number of stitches, followed by the color notation in parentheses, ie (B) = Black or (R) = Red or (W) = White

Turn at the end of each row.

Pattern:

Start with Black, chain 194

Finish Off, Weave in Ends.

*note: if some of your edges are too "cut" for your taste, try fleshing them out a little while you weave in your ends!  I did that for mine and it worked out great!

{edits made to correct rows 38-45 on 5/13.  There are still errors in the following rows: 59-61, 80, 88, 110}

{edits made to correct rows 59-61, 80, 88, 101, 108 and 110 made on 2/26/14.  I think this corrects all of the known errors in the pattern.  If you find more, please let me know!

Also, i have uploaded the original chart that I used for this pattern.  You can see that there are some subtle variations in color and this is where I would work half the square (as you work 2 stitches for each square across a single row) in one color and the other half in the other.  With the chart, you can use your own judgement.  Enjoy!

  1. Great pattern, thank you for sharing it! One question though- what size hook did you use?

  2. Hi, I am making this blanket and I am stuck on row 15, the last set of stitches it says to do 50 dc with black but it leaves 21 stitches not worked. Am I to assume that the last 21 stitches are to be done with black? My partner is a HUGE batman fan and I want to complete this by Valentines day but I am super stuck...let me know...
    Thanks, Becca

  3. @witknitter- totally forgot to put that in there, but I used an H. I've updated the pattern- Thanks!

    @Becca- I looked back at my original pattern and realized there was a typo on rows 15 and 16, it's not you! I have corrected that to add in the omitted stitches. Thanks!

  6. I can't wait to start this project! Could you elaborate a bit more on what yarn you used though? I tried to find it on the Red Heart website, but there are multiple options, but the yardage on the skeins differ significantly. What yardage were your skeins?

    1. No problem, I used the Red Heart Super Saver, in Cherry Red (http://www.redheart.com/yarn/super-saver-regular/cherry-red) and Black (http://www.redheart.com/yarn/super-saver-regular/black). They are both no dye lot and 160 yards per skein. The white was also Red Heart Super Saver in a negligible amount (like maybe 3-6 yards). I hope that helps!

  7. I can't wait to start on this! Now, this might be a silly question but what does the BACK of the blanket look like? I'm curious how all the connecting pieces as you switch from red to black look and if they're likely to get snagged. (I'm wondering if it'd be worthwhile to crochet a separate solid piece and stitch them together?)

    1. After you have woven in the ends, the back of the blanket looks like a mirror version of the front side. Batman is just flipped from one side to another. It works up like a flat blanket.

  8. I have worked up through row 12. I am having a hard time because there should be 191 attached in each row, but when I got to the end of row the pattern says to work 6 DC in red. However, I only had room to work 5. I have counted the attached over and over and they add up, but now I am worried that there is a problem with the rest of the Afghan now that the pattern is compromised. Help me please!

    1. There should be 192 in each row. Also, there are errors as noted at the end of the pattern. I still haven't gone back to try and find where they are, but will be posting the actual grid once I can figure out how to do so. :)

  9. My apologies...there should be 192 in each row. I have worked past the problem. I had to accept that the bottom on the blanket won't be perfect, but once I crochet a border on the blanket it won't be noticeable. I am currently plugging in the color on a graph in excel to try to find the other errors in the pattern before I work through them. I can't wait to see your grid compared to mine to see where I messed up! Thank you for sharing a really cool pattern. I can't wait to see my finished product!

  10. I Love this pattern an want to make for my husband. I have one question. Did you cut the yarn when you changed colors or just drop to the side? Thanks!!

  11. If I make this using just SC do you think it would be a better size for a twin size bed? My daughter loves Batman and has chosen this design just because of the name. She thinks it was designed just for her, because her name is Lilu!

  13. On row 9 it says: R9: ch 3 (B), dc (B), 6 dc (R), 56 dc (B), 4 dc (R), 124 dc (B).
    After chaining 3, how many dc in black? If each row is supposed to have 192, then I assume it would be 2. I just want to double check. Thanks!

    1. ch3 in black, dc in black, then move to red. It counts as two stitches, but you aren't actually working a dc twice. does that help?
